This position supports the California Department of Public Health’s (CDPH) mission and strategic plan by protecting the public’s health, promoting health and wellness, and optimizing data and technology.
The Research Scientist Staff (RS Staff) works under the general direction of the Research Scientist Supervisor I, Epidemiology and Evaluation Unit, within the Substance and Addiction Prevention Branch (SAPB). The RS Staff leads the development and implementation of epidemiological, formative research, and evaluation projects related to substance use, addiction, and other behavioral health factors. The RS Staff will use behavioral sciences theoretical models and epidemiological research methods to evaluate data sources, develop scientific indicators and tools, conduct scientific studies, oversee the development and implementation of formative research and evaluation plans, conduct analyses, and prepare data webpages, reports, data briefs, and manuscripts for dissemination to diverse audiences. The RS Staff is expected to make independent, complex decisions and is responsible for ensuring the scientific quality of all administrative and research reporting requirements. Minimal travel (3%) is required to participate in local, regional, and national activities. Some overnight stays may be required.

Telework Information
This position may be eligible for telework. The amount of telework permitted is at the discretion of the Department and is subject to change, consistent with CDPH’s Telework Program. All employees who telework are required to be California residents in accordance with Government Code 14200. Candidates who reside outside of the state of California may be interviewed; however, the selected candidate must have a primary residency in the state of California prior to appointment (and continue to maintain California residency) as a condition of employment. Travel may be required for this position. Reimbursement for travel takes into consideration an employee’s designated headquarters, as reflected in the duty statement, and is subject to regulations and bargaining unit contract provisions. All commute expenses to the designated headquarters office will be the responsibility of the selected candidate.

Please note , at least one year of work experience must include the following experience: journey level work (NOT entry level) including planning, organizing, and carrying out scientific research studies of moderate (as opposed to limited) scientific scope and complexity. May serve as a team member on projects and investigations within their program and act as a technical scientific consultant on a specific phase of a more complex scientific research study. Makes independent, difficult decisions within a specific scientific field using established guidelines and technical scientific procedures and adapts research methods to problems with limited scientific scope.
2) Describe your experience conducting and disseminating quantitative and/or qualitative data analyses.
3) Describe your experience conducting formative research and/or evaluation for public health prevention programs.
